Being Sustainable When Planning a Wedding

Sustainability when planning a wedding is essential to reduce waste. One of life’s biggest events can generate an incredible amount of trash in just a short amount of time, making planning this major milestone an especially challenging endeavor.

Weddings often face an issue of excess food that goes uneaten or is carelessly discarded. This contributes to waste problems, but can be easily avoided by being more mindful about your choices.

To make sure your wedding is as eco-friendly as possible, here are some tips to reduce waste:

1. Be selective when selecting vendors you work with.

When selecting vendors, ensure they share your eco-friendly vision and are willing to collaborate on a sustainable plan. Doing this makes the planning process much smoother, reducing your carbon footprint in the process.

2. Select a nearby venue to reduce transportation costs and emissions related to travel.

A venue close by will reduce the need for guests to be transported from the ceremony to the reception, thus decreasing gas usage and waste produced during transport.

3. Request your caterer to obtain all ingredients from local farms and butcher shops.

Locally sourcing your food can reduce your environmental impact as it reduces the use of chemicals in growing, harvesting and transporting ingredients. Furthermore, this saves money since you won’t have to buy items from outside the area.

4. Reduce Your Carbon Footprint by Reusing or Renting Decorations

Opting for decor that can be reused or rented from other couples is an easy way to go green. This approach works great for table centerpieces or other wedding touches like flowers and candles, which can all be recycled.

5. Utilize recycled paper products or email correspondence whenever feasible to reduce the use of printed invitations and other printed materials.

6. Display gifts that benefit the environment and urge your guests to do the same.

Giving guests something that contributes to your special day, whether it’s a gift certificate to an area coffee shop or seeds for planting, will make them feel good about being part of it and also reduces your environmental footprint.

7. Discard or donate any unwanted items that won’t be used during the wedding.

Purchasing new decorations for your wedding event often means using disposable plastic, which contributes to the environmental burden and adds to waste production. Reuse any unwanted items so they can be reused again on another special occasion or donate them to a charity that will use them in another event.

8. Opt for a venue that is naturally beautiful to avoid adding unnecessary decor that does not enhance the space.

Weddings are momentous events, and it’s natural to want to deck the halls in beautiful decorations. Unfortunately, too many decorations can end up in the trash; try not to add too many unnecessary extras!
